Amalia's family tradition was going on trips to Anna Maria Island. The tradition began because Amalia talked frequently about wanting to go on a trip to Florida. Eventually, they settled on going to Anna Maria Island because they have family in Tampa and some of their friends have houses on the island. They travel by airplane to Florida and then have an hour car ride to reach their final destination. The island is only 7 miles long so when they visit the island they rent golf carts to get around in. Amalia's mom said, "it's like riding in a little convertible." Amalia, with the help of her mom, shared some other sweet memories. One memory was the time they found a box turtle in the garage and Amalia was holding it. Another memory was from the Sandbar Restaurant where Amalia was selected to ring a bell to announce the time of sunset, which is a special event at the restaurant. Amalia's favorite activity is to visit the beach. She was kind enough to bring a seashell for each of us as part of her presentation. They have spotted dolphins swimming in the ocean! A final memory and special activity while on vacation is going to get ice cream as a family. Amalia's mom brought in ice cream for us to eat to represent Amalia's special trips to ice cream shops on the island.
Jordan and his mom took some time today to talk about how our ears work. The children were invited to place an ear plug in their left ear (the same ear as Jordan). Next they covered their right ear while Mrs. Falk stood different places and spoke. They found out that their hearing changed as a result. They also learned about the microphone that the teachers wear that connects directly to Jordan's hearing aide. They were also invited to try out the tube from an old hearing aide of Jordan's to notice how their hearing changed when they used it. (it was disinfected each time before being placed into the next ear) The goal of this experience was to help them understand how Jordan's hearing works for him and how the tools he uses help him. This reinforces the idea that there are ways that we are the same and ways we are different. Thank you to Mrs. Falk and Jordan for this valuable experience.
During our study of Laura Numeroff, the children were grouped by threes or fours and invited to create puppets for one of the author’s stories. The book options were If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, If You Give a Dog a Donut, If You Give a Moose a Muffin, If You Give a Cat a Cupcake, and If You Give a Pig a Pancake. First, the group had to make a decision as to which book they were going to create puppets for. The next step was to list the characters and important props from the story. Finally, the children each selected one character or prop to design and create for our classroom puppet theater! See our finished products below! All of the children had to work hard, take their time, and took pride in doing their very best job!
