Kareem and his mom shared their family tradition of celebrating Ramadan which begins on the ninth month of their calendar when they see the new moon. Kareem’s first Ramadan happened when he was six months old. During the whole month the adults fast all day long. This time of fasting helps them to concentrate on their faith and to remind them to be thankful for all they have.
The children participate by performing good deeds. Kareem shared that one of his good deeds is helping his mom do the dishes. The children also pray and participate in acts of kindness.
Kareem beamed proudly as his mom shared his charity jar. He and his family collect money for others in need. Last year during Ramadan, Kareem and his family shopped with the money and bought some items for a family in need. They presented the items along with some yummy food to the family. The family was so grateful. This is just one example of the kindness that they share during the month.

Kareem and his mom shared the importance of lanterns and light during Ramadan and provided small lantern kits for Kareem’s classmates. The Iqbals also supplied each SK friend with small wooden ornaments (star and moon) to paint and decorate along with a special flower bookmark. These are all symbols of Ramadan.
When Ramadan ends, (after four weeks) the fast is broken and Eid al-Fitr happens. Kareem and his family dress in their finest clothes. His sisters wear bangles and get henna designs on their hands. They eat lots of delicious food and gather with family and friends. To recognize this “Festival of the Sweets”, the children enjoy a yummy, sweet treat. Kareem and his provided each classmate with a sweet treat to enjoy at home.
Thank you to the Iqbal family, for introducing and sharing your tradition of Ramadan with SK! What a meaningful and wonderful holiday to celebrate. We appreciate their generosity and acts of kindness.
